Neuralink, the brain technology company founded by Elon Musk, faced scrutiny after a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) inspection revealed “objectionable conditions or practices” at its animal testing facilities in California. The findings, made during a June 2023 inspection, were disclosed in a letter to Congress on November 29, following concerns raised by Representative Earl Blumenauer, a Democrat from Oregon with a focus on animal welfare.
The FDA noted that while the issues required Neuralink to take voluntary corrective measures, they did not pose a significant threat to the safety of the company’s brain implant device. According to the agency, the cited problems were related to documentation in animal research, and no major regulatory action was deemed necessary. However, details about the specific areas of concern remain undisclosed.
Neuralink did not comment on whether it had addressed the problems, but the company has previously claimed to adhere to high standards in its treatment of animals. Despite these assertions, past reports have highlighted internal complaints about rushed experiments leading to the unnecessary suffering of test animals, including pigs and monkeys.
The FDA’s inspection occurred shortly after the agency approved Neuralink to conduct limited human trials of its brain chip, which aims to assist individuals with paralysis or blindness by converting thoughts into digital actions. The company has implanted the device in two U.S. patients and plans to expand trials to Canada.
Adding to the complexity, Musk has taken on a new government role as the leader of a federal efficiency department under President-elect Donald Trump, a position that could potentially shield his companies from regulatory oversight.
