In 2023, the number of fatal shark attacks doubled from the prior year. Previously, in 2022, only five fatalities from shark bites were reported. This number jumped to ten in 2023. Of these ten fatal shark encounters, four occurred in Australia. Surfers were more likely to be the victims of a shark bite than people who were wading or swimming.
Higher numbers of shark attacks on surfers are likely due to sharks mistaking them for prey. Surfers may be confused for seals or turtles. This can lead to sharks mistakenly biting surfers. In 2023, 42 percent of the 69 reported “unprovoked” shark bites were experienced by surfers. The most common activity for “provoked” shark attacks was spearfishing.
According to TIME, while the rate of shark attacks per million people has remained roughly steady since the 1950s, the number of shark attacks has slowly risen since the 1980s. Some scientists attribute this to climate change. In a 2016 study, researchers explain that as the globe warms, sharks are moving from less populated areas to more populated areas. This increases the likelihood that sharks and humans will encounter each other. Beaches and oceans are also becoming more crowded, as more people spend longer in the water.
While fatalities attributed to shark bites did double in 2023, the risk of becoming the victim of a shark attack remains small. However, there are a few precautions to take to reduce the risk. First of all, swim with a friend or at a beach with a lifeguard. Three of the four fatal shark attacks which occurred in Australia in 2023 took place in a remote area. This increases the time before critical medical intervention can be administered. It is also crucial to adhere to warnings administered by water safety officials. Refrain from excessive splashing or erratic movements. Additionally, exercise increased caution in areas that are known to be frequented by sharks.
