Cow Who Escaped Slaughter Now Enjoying Life at a Sanctuary

Cow in the pasture

Miriam, a 6-year-old ex-beef cow defied the odds and found her way to safety at Happy Compromise Farm and Sanctuary in Waverly, New York.

The sanctuary, founded by Eyrn Leavens and Oliver Gawlik, has become a haven for animals like Miriam. The duo’s compassionate mission to give rescued animals a happy and secure retirement has garnered much attention and Support from animal lovers worldwide.

Miriam’s miraculous escape from slaughter was captured in an Instagram video posted by Happy Compromise Farm and Sanctuary. According to the footage, Miriam and her fellow herd members are seen running joyously up from their pasture to the top of the property, where shelters and hay await them. “They are following our UTV,” Leavens explained, “and they are so excited to see Oliver and get to dinner.” In the video, we also meet Penelope, the brown cow, and twins Titus and Tabitha, who share the same fate of living happily in the sanctuary.

Miriam’s journey to the sanctuary began when the previous owners of the land surrendered her to Leavens and Gawlik. The owners had run a meat community-supported agriculture farm and had failed to round up Miriam for slaughter. Seeing an opportunity to save her, Leavens and Gawlik didn’t hesitate to welcome her into their sanctuary. When Miriam arrived, she was fearful and traumatized, but over the past two years, she has blossomed into the matriarch of the sanctuary, showing boundless affection for all the animals that call it home.

The Happy Compromise Farm and Sanctuary has faced its share of challenges. The decision to relocate from Oregon to New York in September 2021 was driven by the worsening wildfire situation on the West Coast, highlighting the impact of climate change on both humans and animals. Despite the difficulties, Leavens and Gawlik have remained steadfast in their mission to provide a loving and secure environment for rescued animals.

At present, the sanctuary is a bustling home for 115 rescued animals, including cows, goats, sheep, alpacas, dogs, cats, and various birds. Each day is a whirlwind of activity, revolving around the well-being of the sanctuary’s residents. The morning hours are dedicated to extensive chores for all the animals, ensuring their comfort and safety. Additionally, Leavens and Gawlik work on the farm, cultivating a diverse array of vegetables, herbs, fruits, and flowers that are shared with the community through a free farm stand.

Running a sanctuary is no small task, and the couple acknowledges that there are no days off when it comes to caring for these beloved animals. Nevertheless, the satisfaction of knowing they are making a positive difference in the lives of these creatures makes the work both essential and rewarding.
