The tender bond between a mother and child is undeniable and transcends species boundaries. This was painfully clear in a recent incident at Miller’s Ark farm in Hampshire, UK. In a heartbreaking episode, a distressed donkey named Astra was seen on camera crying for her two-month-old foal, Moon, who was cruelly snatched from the farm fields.

The incident has sparked nationwide outrage, with animal lovers rallying for the safe return of the foal to her distraught mother. Elizabeth Miller, the farm’s owner, was shocked to discover Moon’s disappearance during her routine evening round-up of the mothers and foals. The farm now offers a £10,000 reward for Moon’s safe return in an earnest attempt to mend this broken bond.

Miller expressed grave concerns about both Astra and Moon’s well-being. The young foal may not yet be robust enough to survive independently, while Astra, in her maternal distress, has barely eaten since the incident. Elizabeth’s recount of Astra’s behavior is heart-wrenching. She says, “Astra has been just completely devastated, pacing up and down the fence line, braying. She doesn’t know what to do with herself because all of her natural instincts are to find the foal.”

The possibility that the foal was lifted over the fence and taken away while staff attended to farm visitors is being investigated. The mother-daughter duo was known to be inseparable, adding a layer of urgency to the ongoing search.

This unfortunate incident isn’t an isolated one. Animal thefts in the UK have surged, hitting a seven-year high with an average of eight dogs stolen daily. In 2021 alone, a staggering 2,760 dogs were snatched from their owners, marking a 16% increase since 2015. Small breeds like French Bulldogs, Jack Russel Terriers, Chihuahuas, and Pugs are particularly targeted. The recent surge in demand for dogs during the pandemic has inflated their cost, making them attractive targets for criminals.

While authorities, including Hampshire police and Isle of Wight news, are diligently working to reunite Moon and Astra, it’s a sobering reminder of the need for tighter security measures for our animal friends, particularly at a time when animal theft is on the rise.

If you have any information regarding this incident, you can contact the police directly or reach out to Miller’s Ark farm. Let’s all work together to bring baby Moon home and remind ourselves of the value of compassion and respect towards all animals.
