Shannon Smith, a Delhi Township resident, faced a traumatic experience after a routine grooming appointment for her emotional Support dog, Hadley, turned into a costly ordeal.
In June, Smith brought Hadley to Classy Canines Pet Sitting, Daycare, and Grooming, a place he had visited before without any problems. However, this time, she received a phone call informing her that Hadley’s tail had been cut. Upon arriving, Smith found her dog bleeding and missing several inches of his tail, leading to medical expenses of around $1,000.
Despite weeks of prescriptions and care, Hadley eventually recovered physically, but Smith says she has yet to get a clear explanation of how the injury occurred. “I’ve still never gotten a full story on how you possibly go through the bone,” she said.
Efforts to seek compensation from the grooming business and its insurance provider, Grange Insurance, proved fruitless. A letter from Ryan Babb, a Commercial Casualty Claims Representative, explained that the policy excludes incidents involving animals receiving grooming services. Additionally, the Animal Bailee endorsement, which offers broader coverage, does not apply to injuries sustained during grooming.
Smith has since accepted that she won’t be reimbursed for Hadley’s care. However, she wants to raise awareness about potential risks associated with grooming services.
“I hope that people realize that when they take their dog to the groomer, they might not be covered for any accidents that happen, and to be very careful of who they choose to take them to,” Smith advised.
The grooming business, Classy Canines, has since closed, leaving Smith with unanswered questions.
