29 Dogs Begin New Lives in South Carolina

Twenty-nine dogs in South Carolina have left their past of cruelty behind and are starting a new journey filled with hope. Among them is Tank, a wise old dog who carries the stories of his past in his calm demeanor. Rescued from a dogfighting case in Horry County, South Carolina, Tank and his 28 friends have found a second chance at life thanks to the efforts of dedicated individuals and organizations.

Justin Wyatt, a local police captain responsible for the Horry County Animal Care Center, recalls the urgency to find help for the rescued dogs. He said, “It doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from: Most everybody agrees that dogfighting is bad”. With the assistance of Jen Deane, a dog behavior expert working with the shelter through a grant from Best Friends, a plan was set in motion to ensure the dogs’ well-being and future.

Best Friends, committed to supporting dog behavior programs aiding traumatized animals, stepped in to provide financial assistance for the care of these dogs. Jen Deane’s assessment led to the decision to transfer the dogs to two rescue organizations: Renegade Paws Rescue in Savannah, Georgia, and Beyond the Fight Initiative in Palm Bay, Florida.

The dogs, now given new names like Venus Moon and Nutmeg, are beginning to thrive in their new environments. Renegade Paws Rescue, led by Jennifer Taylor, has initiated the Underdog Uprising program, pairing each dog with a human advocate. These advocates undergo training to help the dogs build trust and learn essential skills for adoption. Similarly, Beyond the Fight Initiative, spearheaded by Ashley Dames, serves as a halfway house for dogs from challenging backgrounds. Ashley’s own journey with a rescued dog inspired her to dedicate herself to helping animals like those from Horry County.

Tank, the elderly statesman of the group, has found a devoted friend in Cindy Weimer, a volunteer at Renegade Paws Rescue. Despite his age and physical limitations, Tank is slowly opening up to Cindy’s affection, especially for cheese treats. The efforts to save these dogs reflect a larger mission toward achieving no-kill status in animal shelters across the United States by 2025. Best Friends emphasizes that achieving this goal requires collective action and Support from the community.
