Colossal Biosciences has announced the creation of the Colossal Foundation, a non-profit organization aiming to address the growing extinction crisis. With an initial $50 million in funding, the foundation is set to focus on three main areas: saving endangered species, preserving biodiversity for the future, and advancing Conservation technology.
One key area of the foundation’s work is focused on protecting species that are currently at risk of extinction. Among these endangered animals are the vaquita, northern white and Sumatran rhinos, ivory-billed woodpecker, and pink pigeon. One of the most promising strategies for achieving this goal is biobanking, a process that involves storing biological samples to conserve the genetic diversity of species. This could play a vital role in saving species like the vaquita, one of the rarest mammals on Earth.
Ben Lamm, co-founder of Colossal Biosciences, explained the importance of this approach: “With so few vaquita remaining… we are losing huge fractions of the population’s genetic diversity every year.” He emphasized the need to preserve this genetic material while populations are still extant. If the vaquita population continues to decline, these biobanks could hold the key to one day reviving the species by reintroducing lost genetic diversity.
Another major focus of the foundation is ensuring the biodiversity of future generations. Biobanks, according to Lamm, can serve as a “safety net” for species on the brink of extinction. By preserving their genetic material now, we may have the resources needed to bring back species that disappear in the future.
The foundation is also exploring the possibility of reviving recently extinct species, such as the ivory-billed woodpecker. According to Matt James, a Colossal team member, the process would involve sequencing as many ivory-billed woodpecker samples as possible, as well as those of closely related species. In addition to advanced genetic work, Conservation efforts would need to restore the bird’s original habitat in the southeastern United States.
In tandem with these efforts, the foundation plans to deploy cutting-edge technologies, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, to improve our understanding of animal behaviors and ecosystems. This technology-driven approach is already being put into action through partnerships with organizations like Save the Elephants and Elephant Havens in Botswana, where drones and AI-enabled systems are being used to monitor vulnerable populations.
By combining biobanking, technological innovation, and partnerships with Conservation groups, the Colossal Foundation is positioning itself as a vital force in the fight against species extinction. As Lamm stated, “Every species plays a critical role within its respective ecosystem… Every time we lose a species within an ecosystem, that ecosystem loses stability.” The foundation hopes that its work will help stabilize these ecosystems and preserve the biodiversity that is essential for the health of our planet.
