A distressing incident unfolded in Hueytown, Alabama, leaving a family shattered and their beloved pet, Solar, injured. Rose Kirk recounted the episode to Birmingham news station WBRC, detailing how her family’s tranquil afternoon turned into a nightmare when an Amazon delivery driver allegedly shot their dog.

Solar and Lunar, the Kirk family’s pups, were lounging on their porch chairs when the tranquility was shattered by a gunshot. Rose Kirk rushed out to find Solar wounded, with the bullet having pierced his shoulder and exited through his chest. While Solar miraculously survived, the injuries inflicted upon him necessitated costly surgery to address internal bleeding.

The Hueytown Police Department’s subsequent investigation unveiled a narrative of self-defense. According to their statement shared on Facebook, as the delivery driver approached the residence to drop off a package, Solar purportedly emerged from under the porch, displaying aggressive behavior and charging at the driver. In what the driver deemed an act of self-preservation, a single shot was fired.

However, Rose Kirk contests the official account. She asserts that Solar was securely leashed and that the driver had no justification to encroach upon their property. “He was on a chain,” she emphasized in her interview, questioning the driver’s decision to proceed onto their porch despite noticing the dogs lounging peacefully.

The Kirk family’s GoFundMe page paints a picture of the incident’s aftermath. Solar’s sister, Lunar, witnessed her brother’s ordeal, and the trauma has left her inconsolable, shaking in terror. The family’s plea for financial assistance reveals the overwhelming burden of Solar’s veterinary expenses and the emotional toll exacted by the incident.

In response to the uproar, Amazon swiftly addressed the matter. An Amazon spokesperson affirmed that the driver implicated in the incident is no longer affiliated with the company, highlighting Amazon’s stringent policies prohibiting delivery personnel from carrying weapons. However, they are permitted to carry dog deterrent devices in compliance with state and local regulations.
