In need of a little something to boost your day, Green Monsters? Then check out this adorable video of baby orangutan Jecka as he chows down on some fruit! He is being cared for by the kind folk at International Animal Rescue (IAR) in Borneo, who recently rescued a traumatized Udin the orangutan from life as an exotic pet. Jecka, too, originally came to IAR in desperate need of help. He had been orphaned, and was struggling to survive in the forests of Borneo on his own. After a lot of intensive rehabilitation and care, however, he now appears to be on the mend.
The IAR team said, “Jecka is becoming more and more independent each day! He can now be left in his tree hammock and will play and feed happily without crying out for comfort and security from the vets. This amazing video shows that he is eating well and looking very healthy, which is great news. He will soon undergo his second medical checkup and if everything looks good he will be able to join Budi and Jemmi in baby school!”
IAR’s “baby school” is a way of preparing rehabilitated primates for life in the wild. Here, they learn how to climb, jump, and fend for themselves. Lis Key, IAR Communications Manager, said, “It can take years for these animals to develop the skills and the strength they need to survive in the forest. In the meantime they progress from baby school, here babies and very young infants learn to climb and play with other orangutans, on to forest school. Here older infants are given more freedom to behave as they would in the wild, foraging for food, building nests and even sleeping out in the forest overnight if they so choose.”
