A small town in Montérégie, Quebec, was recently the site of a horrific discovery – a severely beaten dog was found buried alive by his abuser. The dog was found by a man who noticed a paw sticking out from the dirt. He immediately uncovered the male Boxer and called 911. It was a miracle – the dog was still alive. He was taken directly to a veterinary clinic, his condition stable but critical. Unfortunately, despite his slowly improving condition, he died from a heart attack, likely brought on by the severe trauma he had gone through.
The SPCA, who were taking care of the dog and examining the case, believe that the animal had been hit with a blunt object before he was buried. The abuser may have thought the dog was already dead. The case has been under investigation by the local police.
According to a Care2 petition, a man has now turned himself in in connection with the crime. The man, who is in his 40s and lives in the area, was questioned by the police, then released on a promise to appear in court. No court date has been set, yet, however, and the investigation continues, as the officers are awaiting more information from the necropsy.
Depending on the findings, the man can be charged with animal cruelty – a criminal offense that comes with a possibility of up to five years in prison. Considering the heinousness of the crime, no option other than the full five years behind bars seems to be a possibility. Very often, acts of animal cruelty are still not punished proportionately to their severity and the unbelievable suffering of the abused animals. This case definitely should not be another example of that.

Is the abandonment of a pet in a wilderness area, far from civilization, regarded as abuse? Or is it deemed a good idea?
We live at the edge of the wilderness, and we have seen numerous cats suddenly appear. They have consumed many ground birds and other wildlife we usually see, and have attracted coyotes, which eat them.
Is this regarded as abuse?
