Often in the times of tragedy, the best in human beings emerges, as is the case in the above video that has quickly gone viral.
The video features a compassionate civilian who was fleeing the Thomas fire in La Conchita, California, a small community just outside of Santa Barbara County. He stopped along Highway 1 when he saw a small wild rabbit amidst the chaos. As nightmarish flames engulfed the surroundings just inches away from the man, and the rabbit fled in fear and confusion, his panic grew. However, as if by divine intervention, the rabbit quickly turned back around and ran toward the man, who immediately scooped up the little critter and brought him to safety.
This good Samaritan did not wish to be interviewed by the news photographer who caught the footage, but he is a true hero in the eyes of many and stands as an inspiration to others to put the lives of even the smallest of creatures as a priority.
The Thomas fire started on Monday and quickly spread to 90,000 acres by Wednesday. With extreme high wind warnings (up to 80 mph!), these Southern California fires are expected to spark and grow. A number of warnings have been sent regarding animals and the fires. People are being told to keep their animals indoors and to leave water outside for wildlife who may wind up in their yards while fleeing from the fires.
