Humans have an interesting relationship with wildlife. We constantly impede on animal’s natural habitat, whether it’s to clear out forests for palm oil or livestock grazing, build a pipeline, or construct a highway, and yet we view wildlife as pests impeding on our land. When people see opossums going through their trash or bears walking through their backyards, few chalk it up to nature. Many call animal control or try to aggressively shoo these creatures away themselves. Of course, there are a few exceptions to this.
The man in the video above, for example, does not seem all too perturbed after discovering a group of raccoons rummaging through the dumpster in his driveway. In fact, he helps them climb out to safety! After placing a wooden plank in the dumpster, he holds it steady as each raccoon carefully makes their way out. Considering all of the mean humans these raccoons have likely encountered in their lives, it’s not too surprising that they seem hesitant to climb out of the dumpster at first. After some reassuring words from their savior, though, they scamper away in peace.
This video definitely has an amusing and light tone to it, but it still has an important underlying message: this Earth belongs to animals just as much as it does to humans, and we can all learn how to coexist with the wildlife a little bit better.
