It’s no secret that the dairy industry treats cows like commodities. On factory farms, cows have their babies ripped away moments after giving birth, are forced to stand for hours at a time, are sometimes beaten violently, and are hardly treated with the respect they deserve. While it may be tempting to think that this type of abuse only happens on large industrialized farms, treating animals like commodities instead of living, breathing beings is sadly a trend that can be seen in all types of farming facilities, big or small.
The cow in the video above, for example, resides on Waikato farm in New Zealand. Her baby calf is lying dead just a few meters away from her, but the cow cannot move because she is being held in place by hip clamps. As SAFE, the New Zealand Animal rights organization who shot the video, shared, not only is this farm’s use of hip clamps cruel, it’s illegal. As SAFE relays, the Dairy Cattle Code of Welfare states that “hip clamps should not be left on any longer than 10 minutes and should be loosened and then removed as soon as the cow is bearing weight. If hip clamps are to be used for lifting recumbent cattle, they should be put on over light padding.” This cow was given no padding and was clearly left there for a while considering her front two legs collapsed from exhaustion. Being held in place by metal clamps is stressful enough, but to have a dead baby in eyesight and not being able to do anything is just downright cruel.
Cows are incredibly intelligent and emotional beings that feel pain just like any other animal, or human, for that matter. If you think cows deserve better, please share this article.

Disgusting and heartbreaking. The “Food Industries” have for decades hidden their sadistic, sinful treatment of trapped, innocent animals. But the awful reality now is documented and very visible, so we certainly can no longer claim ignorance of this reality. In the area of animal suffering, in both the animals’ lives and their deaths, we must all LOOK at what we don’t LIKE to look at, and DO WHATEVER WE CAN to stop the torments these huge factory ‘farms’ and other groups inflict on millions of creatures every day. Various cultural beliefs or traditions or religious practices are no argument or justification for the fears, the madness, the sheer agony that sentient, unsuspecting creatures endure every single day. None of us needs the horrific mistreatment of helpless animals in order to eat or have clothes to wear or be entertained.
