In the U.S., where dogs and cats are beloved animals, treated like babies by their guardians, citizens simply can’t wrap their heads around the idea of someone eating them. While it can be argued that these folks should be extending the same level of compassion towards farm animals like pigs, chickens, and cows, in American culture, farm animals and domestic animals are treated extremely differently. On the contrary, there are places in other parts of the world where eating dog and cat meat is somewhat of the norm. Yes, there’s plenty of opposition to this practice, but in places like South Korea, it is shockingly still legal.
There are other countries in the world, however, where people sometimes obtain animals, like cats, illegally and sell the meat of these animals unbeknownst to their customers. Recently, in Chennai, India, the police and animal activists raided several roadside eateries based on a tip-off that they were abducting, abusing, boiling the cats alive, and skinning them for their meat. Many of the cats are thought to have been pets.
Thankfully, police officers and activists from the People for Animals (PFA) group were able to save sixteen cats through the raid. The poor creatures will definitely need some time to get over the trauma but goodness knows they are in a much safer place now.
