Plant-based food manufacturer, Impossible Foods, recently announced that they have partnered with the United States military to offer their plant-based meat products at multiple overseas dining facilities. US Army Central bases in North Africa, the Persian Gulf, the Middle East, and Southwest Asia will soon offer Impossible Beef and Impossible Burger products. According to Impossible Foods, this initiative will meet the growing demand for plant-based meat options within the U.S. military.
According to a 2022 survey conducted by the Animal rights organization, Mercy for Animals, plant-based options are in high demand amongst the United States military. While only 7.5 percent of military members polled identified as vegetarian, and 3.5 percent as vegan, Support for increased availability of plant-based meals was high. An overwhelming majority of members polled, 81 percent, wanted vegan Ready to Eat Meals to be offered. Additionally, 63 percent said that they would choose these meals if they were available.
Impossible Foods creates plant-based meat alternative options that are more sustainable and ethical than animal products. They aim to make plant-based meat alternatives more accessible and appealing to a wider range of people.
Although Impossible Foods’ products have been available at some military food operations for the past several years, this is the first time that they have been made available at US Army Central operations. The new partnership will debut soon, after three years of coordination. Impossible Foods’ CEO has said that he is “Thrilled” that the company’s plant-based options will soon be made available to troops. He said, “This is a very proud moment for our team and company, and such an incredible win to start the year!”
Although plant-based meat alternatives have long been thought of as solely for vegans and vegetarians, Impossible Foods is hoping that introducing their products across a variety of institutions will help break down this perception. Ideally, these more sustainable options will be widely adopted into the mainstream.
