Orange juice, a breakfast staple in many American households, is about to become more expensive. A combination of climate change and bacterial disease has left this season’s US orange crops in peril.

Last year, Florida, the hub of the US’s orange juice production, suffered massive damage from back-to-back hurricanes and freezing conditions. The Sunshine State produces over 90% of the US’s orange juice, but storms like Hurricane Ian and Hurricane Nicole have had a catastrophic effect on this industry. Combined with the relentless spread of an incurable citrus greening disease that kills trees within a few years, producers are facing an unprecedented crisis.
This citrus disaster has slashed US orange production to its lowest level in over a century. Matt Joyner, CEO of Florida Citrus Mutual, emphasizes the dire situation, stating, “This season we ended up with just under 16m boxes.” That’s a dramatic decline from the 244m boxes produced at the industry’s peak.
And this isn’t just a Florida problem. Climate change is affecting orange production globally. Countries like Brazil, Spain, and Italy, major producers of oranges, are experiencing extreme weather conditions attributed to Climate change.
So what does this mean for consumers? The price of frozen concentrated orange juice has already doubled in the past year, reaching more than $3 a pound on the Intercontinental Exchange. This price surge is expected to filter through to retailers, meaning that consumers will feel the pinch in the coming months.
As the world grapples with the multifaceted impact of Climate change, even our morning glass of orange juice is becoming a victim. The story of the orange juice industry is a sobering reminder that Climate change isn’t just about melting ice caps and rising sea levels – it’s affecting our daily lives in very tangible ways.
The situation also underlines the importance of sustainable practices and climate-conscious decisions. As weather patterns continue to change and diseases spread, agricultural industries worldwide must adapt to ensure that beloved products like orange juice remain available and affordable. The time to pay attention and act responsibly is now before our morning routines and our planet change irrevocably.
