A recent report by Friends of the Earth highlights an encouraging trend in California’s school lunch programs through an increase in vegetarian meal options. However, despite this progress, the overall percentage of these offerings remains relatively low.
The report, titled Plant-Based Trends in California’s School Lunches, reveals that among the state’s 25 largest school districts, the proportion of vegetarian menu choices rose from 7% in 2019 to 11% in 2023. Some notable additions to the menu include chana masala bowls, vegan tamales, tofu ramen, and veggie falafel wraps, which the organization classifies as “healthy, plant-based” options.
In addition to expanding vegetarian offerings, the report indicates a decrease in the availability of highly processed meats and cheese-laden entrees in schools. The rise in plant-based choices is especially significant among high school students. In 2023, 56% of high schools provided vegetarian options daily, a notable increase from 36% in 2019. For elementary schools, the statistics are even more impressive, with the percentage of schools offering plant-based meals climbing from 16% in 2019 to 60% in 2023.
“It’s remarkable to see the progress we’ve made from the days when a peanut butter and jelly sandwich was the only plant-based option,” remarked Nora Stewart, the climate-friendly food senior program manager at Friends of the Earth, in a recent press release.
Despite these improvements, the report reveals that about 25% of districts still do not provide any plant-based entrees. Additionally, another 25% restrict their vegetarian options to basic offerings like nut butter and jelly sandwiches.
