Spinach is a nutrition superstar! Sadly though, it often gets slimy before you manage to finish the whole package. With food waste contributing roughly eight percent of all human-created greenhouse gasses, this leafy green’s propensity for wilting can feel particularly defeating. However, it is easy to turn nutritious spinach into a healthy, vitamin and mineral-packed powder. This powder can be stored in an airtight container for quite some time. This makes it the perfect way to use up excess spinach which might otherwise be thrown out.
Spinach is a nutritious powerhouse. The leafy green vegetable is packed with Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Vitamin A, Iron, Calcium, and Folic Acid. Additionally, it has tons of fiber. Consuming spinach may help to lower blood pressure, improve eye health, lower oxidative stress, and even help prevent cancer. All pretty good reasons to avoid wasting this fantastic food!
To make spinach powder, follow these simple instructions from Tasting Table. First, rinse the spinach leaves thoroughly. Then dry them in a salad spinner or by patting them with a paper towel. Once the leaves are dry, place them in a single layer in a dehydrator. Or, put them in the oven at 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the leaves are fully dried and crisp, they are ready to be turned into powder. Using a food processor or blender, grind the leaves to a fine powder. You can also use a spice grinder. Then, store the powder in a dry, airtight container.
Luckily, spinach powder can be incorporated into lots of foods! Blend it into a morning smoothie or acai bowl. Or, add it to berry oatmeal. It can also be incorporated into pasta sauces, or sprinkled on a pizza. Spinach powder can also be a fun color booster for pasta dough or falafel!
