Vegan chefs are hard to come by in some states, but America does have some that are extremely talented at concocting scrumptious plant-based meals. We have enjoyed tasting the following chefs’ food, and are pleased to present our picks for 10 rockstar vegan chefs in America! They are not necessarily listed in any order, and we know there are hundreds of other talented chefs (just look at these rockstars!), so if you know a chef that should be on this list (maybe it’s you?), please add a comment!
1. Wes Hannah of Blossoming Lotus
Portland vegan chef, Wes Hannah, (former chef and owner of Blossoming Lotus) a renowned restaurant where happy vegans flock. With a 4 star rating on Yelp, Hannah knows how to serve up amazing, local, organic vegan food. As winner of Portland’s Hottest Chef 2011 competition, he evidently deserves a spot on One Green Planet’s top vegan chef list! 2. Stephanie Viviani of VegOut Las Vegas
Heading to Vegas for the weekend? You have to visit the Fresh 52 Farmer’s Market and see Stephanie and Justin Viviani! Mr. And Mrs. VegOut sell you unbelievably fresh, oil-free, vegan cuisine that is sure to please! Stephanie is participating in Vegas’ first vegan chef competition this year, and being picked by One Green Planet as a rockstar chef, we hope she wins! She and her husband work as a team to bring local Las Vegans delicious food every weekend at Town Square, Tivoli Gardens, and a cute outside market on Eastern and Richmar. Despite not having a restaurant, VegOut food is too good to not be recognized.
3. Richard “Rich” Landau of Vedge
Winner of an episode of “Chopped” on the Food Network, Chef Rich Landau dishes up delectable vegan food at Vedge, a high-end Philadelphia restaurant. Landau’s restaurant has been ranked as one of GQ Magazine’s 12 Most Outstanding Restaurants, is .5 stars away from having 5 stars on Yelp, and the chef himself has been recognized as Philly Mag’s Best Chef. All accolades considered, Landau has a knack for cooking vegan food! Before you embark on a quest to see the Liberty Bell and explore the history of Philadelphia, stop by Vedge restaurant for some divine grilled seitan and cheesecake!
4. Roberto Martin
As Ellen DeGeneres’ personal chef, and author of Vegan Cooking for Carnivores, Roberto Martin adapted quickly to cooking vegan and has been immensely successful at transforming plant-based foods into masterpieces. He ranks as a top vegan chef for his celebrity clientele, ability to go vegan, and for delivering marvelous food.
5. Beverly Lynn Bennett
Also known as The Vegan Chef, Beverly Lynn Bennett specializes in making organic, wheat-free, gluten-free, low-fat, sugar-free, and/or raw vegan dishes. She is author of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Vegan Living, The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Vegan Cooking, Vegan Bites: Recipes For Singles, and The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Gluten-Free Vegan Cooking.
6. Ani Phyo
As a remarkable woman who encourages all to enjoy a raw, organic lifestyle, Ani Phyo is more than just a chef. She is also a nutritionist, television host, and cookbook author among other occupations. With her title as an award-winning raw food chef, Phyo delights all palates with her wonderful cuisine which ranks her as a top vegan chef! She utilizes whole, raw ingredients that are sure to brighten you up and excite your taste buds.
7. Tanya Petrovna (formerly of Native Foods Cafe)
Founded 1994 by chef Tanya Petrovna, Native Foods Cafe is the place to go for family-friendly and remarkably tasty vegan fare. She registers as a top vegan chef for making vegan food fun and approachable, and, of course, scrumptious! Petrovna’s cookbook, The Native Foods Restaurant Cookbook, features incredible recipes, highlighting many favorites at her restaurant. Native Foods Cafes has been Zagat rated and acclaimed by USA Today and VegNews. Tanya Petrovna, the chain’s founding chef, is no longer with Native Foods.
8. Daphne Cheng of Suite ThreeOhSix
Boasting celebrity clientele including Alec Baldwin and Vera Wang, chef Daphne Cheng churns out elegantly presented and delectably prepared vegan food at her New York private supperclub and cooking school Suite ThreeOhSix. She is a rising superstar in the New York vegan chef scene with stellar reviews of her Suite ThreeOhSix. Following her passion, Cheng definitely delivers on flavors and concept of her food. If you can get a seat in her loft, be sure to try her mint-pepito pesto and cultured cashew cheese. Cheng imbues her love for food and cooking into her dishes, and you can definitely taste it!
9. Tal Ronnen of Crossroads
Known by Oprah, Ellen, Arianna Huffington, and the Senate, Chef Tal Ronnen, too, has his fair share of famous clientele, and for good reason: his vegan appeals to all dietary preferences. He draws from his family’s foodie culture, his childhood and teenage years, and nostalgia in general to create vegan spin-off dishes that are somewhat close to home. His restaurant, Crossroads, has been featured in various magazines and news sources, including Eater LA and the Huffington Post.
10. Chocolate Covered Katie
Katie Higgins, aka Chocolate Covered Katie, is a genius when it comes to desserts! Her widely popular blog, Chocolate Covered Katie, features drool-inducing, vegan sweets, main dishes, and snacks accompanied with high quality photos and easy to follow instructions. Although she does not have a restaurant, she has a cookbook coming out soon, and of course, her blog. Her ingenuity when it comes to vegan food ceases to amaze her followers; she clearly qualifies as a top vegan chef!
