According to BBC Future, what we eat might shape how appealing we literally smell to others — and the findings are surprisingly friendly to a plant-based lifestyle. Researchers have found that people who eat more fruit and vegetables tend to have sweeter, more pleasant body scents, while heavy meat and carb-heavy diets are linked to less attractive odours.

In one Australian study, men who ate a diet rich in colorful produce like carrots, tomatoes, and papayas were rated by women as having a floral, fruity scent. These foods are packed with carotenoids — plant pigments that also give skin a healthy glow. The combination seems to broadcast vitality and good health, two qualities the human nose is surprisingly good at detecting.

Meanwhile, research from Charles University in the Czech Republic found that men who avoided meat smelled more pleasant and less intense than when they were eating it regularly. This might be because animal proteins break down into strong-smelling amino acids that our skin bacteria love to amplify. By contrast, the antioxidants in vegetables and garlic can actually make sweat smell more appealing — even sexy, one study showed.

The science behind this all points in one direction: our scent reflects not just hygiene, but overall health and diet. Meat-heavy and processed diets strain the body and create volatile compounds that leak through our pores, while plant-based foods help balance gut bacteria and improve how our bodies metabolize odour-causing molecules.

For anyone trying to live in harmony with the Earth — and maybe attract a little more positive attention along the way — eating more plants might be the easiest win-win yet. Choosing a vibrant, vegan-friendly plate isn’t just good for your health and the environment; it could make you smell amazing, too.
