Growing up, many of us got used to the idea of getting toys for birthdays, holidays, and sometimes, just because. We’ve likely owned so many toys that if we were asked to recall each and every one that we’ve ever had, it just couldn’t be done. Two brothers from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Wens and Adlin Dimanch, did not grow up so privileged. The plastic toys that many of us were given in excess were beyond their family’s means. In a country where over 200,000 children are unable to attend school because of the cost, their parents work tirelessly to put them through private school. But there are some things that Wens and Adlin didn’t learn in school, like how to build functional toy trucks out of trash. Yes, trash.
Not only did these brothers create their very own toy trucks from old plastic bottles, they’ve also fashioned them with functional motors and a working remote control made from discarded electronics. Up to 85 percent of the world’s plastic ends up in landfills, so we fully Support this instance of some seriously crafty upcycling. The most amazing part is that they’re 100 percent self-taught. Not to mention, they’re finding a use for trash that would have lasted for hundreds of years. It’s a win-win.
Are you as amazed by their brilliance as we are? Already showing so much potential at such a young age, we can only imagine what amazing things these boys will do once they’re older.
