We Are Guardians Documentary Spotlights Amazon Defenders Battling Deforestation

A gripping new documentary, We Are Guardians, is set to hit theaters across the U.S. this summer—shining a powerful light on Indigenous defenders of the Amazon Rainforest. Produced by Oscar-winner Fisher Stevens and executive produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, the film captures the day-to-day struggle of Brazil’s Tembé and Guajajara forest guardians as they risk their lives protecting their ancestral lands from illegal logging and land-grabbing.

Directed by Edivan Guajajara, a co-founder of Brazil’s leading Indigenous journalism platform Mídia Indígena, alongside filmmakers Chelsea Greene and Rob Grobman, We Are Guardians offers a raw, vérité-style view into the heart of the rainforest resistance. According to Area 23a, the film doesn’t just spotlight the Amazon—it connects the dots between political neglect, corporate greed, and ecological collapse that threaten ecosystems around the world.

As the Amazon gears up to host COP30 later this year, the documentary’s timing couldn’t be more urgent. Already, its impact campaign has directly supported Indigenous patrols, initiated reforestation projects, and galvanized international attention. Its accolades include the Cinema for Peace Green Film Award and the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Mostra São Paulo International Film Festival.

We Are Guardians opens June 6 in Los Angeles and continues with a 50+ city nationwide tour. It hits New York City on July 11. Full tour dates are available here: Screening Dates.
