Gila monsters are one of only two seriously venomous lizards in the world! This Gila was rescued and brought to a rehabilitation center with a big wound on his tail.
TikTok user @herpin_hippie started by cleaning the area of what he thought could have been a burn wound. This particular Gila monster was found and rescued in an unusual area where these lizards are not usually located. This led @herpin_hippie to the conclusion that someone may have been keeping him illegally as a pet. @herpin_hippie applied some antibacterial cream that’s made for reptile wounds and introduced him to his new habitat while he recovers!
Gila monsters are the largest lizards native to the United States and they get their name from Arizona’s Gila River basin, where they were first discovered. They have large and stout bodies with short tails and typically grow to around 20 inches and 4 lbs, according to National Geographic. Their burrows are commonly found in rocky foothills, as they avoid open areas. Gila monsters also became the first venomous wildlife in North America to be given legal protection!
