Tom Butts, a UK-based strength coach and vegan athlete, has proven once again that plants power performance. According to Plant Based News, Butts secured his third consecutive title as the Natural World’s Strongest Man in the 90kg category at this year’s World Natural Strongman Games in Galway, Ireland. Facing a tough international field, he dominated four out of seven events, including the grueling Zercher Yoke into Sandbag Medley.

Butts, a member of the Vegan Strong PlantBuilt Team, has made a name for himself as a plant-powered powerhouse on the global stage. Earlier this year, he won the under-90kg category at the Official Strongman British Championships and even reached the podium in the 100kg class at the Mr America Sports Festival in 2024. His consistent success underscores that peak strength and performance don’t depend on animal products.

“People think you need meat to be strong. I’m living proof that’s just not true,” Butts said after his latest victory. “Three world titles. All natural. All powered by plants.” His diet centers around simple, nutrient-rich staples like oats, rice, and potatoes, which fuel both his recovery and performance.

Butts originally switched to a plant-based lifestyle for animal welfare reasons, but his success highlights the broader environmental and health benefits of ditching meat. The Vegan Strong PlantBuilt collective, which includes athletes from powerlifting, CrossFit, Olympic lifting, and kettlebell sports, exists to shatter the myth that animal protein is essential for strength. Their achievements help redefine what’s possible when compassion and athleticism go hand in hand.

Stories like Butts’s remind us that choosing vegan diets supports animals, protects the earth, and fuels even the toughest competitors. If the world’s strongest man can thrive on plants, maybe it’s time to add more to your own plate.
