Food banks across the U.S. are facing a major setback after the U.S. Department of Agriculture paused $500 million in food deliveries. The funding, initially announced by the Biden administration last year, was meant to help food banks cope with rising demand and high grocery prices. Now, with truckloads of food canceled, nonprofits are scrambling to fill the gap.

According to CNN’s Tami Luhby, the Central California Food Bank lost 13 truckloads of food, worth $850,000, originally set to arrive between April and July. That means fewer bags of essentials like eggs, milk, and fresh produce for people already struggling to eat.

In Washington, DC, the Capital Area Food Bank had $1.3 million in deliveries canceled, with 27 trucks and 670,000 meals pulled from the USDA system. CEO Radha Muthiah said the organization is working overtime to find Support from donors, retailers, and corporations to make up the difference. But smaller food banks, especially in rural areas, don’t have those same options.

Feeding Southwest Virginia, which supports 26 rural counties, had $513,000 in deliveries paused and says it doesn’t have the budget to replace that food. As CEO Pamela Irvine put it, “We have to make some tough decisions.”

The USDA says the pause is due to the unsustainable structure of programs created during the COVID-19 era, though it has continued to fund some food assistance efforts. Still, this move creates real uncertainty for millions of Americans who rely on food banks for daily nutrition—especially the kind sourced from American farms, which could otherwise Support plant-based, local eating.

Now’s the time to step up. If you can, Support your local food bank with plant-based donations or cash contributions. Choosing vegan options not only feeds more people for less but also helps build a more sustainable, compassionate food system for all.
