A group of farmers and environmental nonprofits have filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), alleging that the agency deleted vital Climate change data from its website. The plaintiffs—led by the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York (NOFA-NY), the Natural Resources Defense Council, and the Environmental Working Group—argue that this move is not only a blow to government transparency but also a significant hindrance to farmers trying to adapt to climate challenges.

According to the lawsuit, USDA removed pages containing climate-related policies, guides, and datasets without public notice or explanation. The missing resources reportedly included crucial information on applying for Climate-Smart Agriculture and Farm Loan Programs, as well as an interactive Forest Service map detailing climate change vulnerability assessments. These deletions come amid an ongoing funding freeze under the Trump administration, further exacerbating uncertainty for farmers who rely on government Support for sustainable agriculture initiatives.

Earthjustice, the legal group representing the plaintiffs, described the move as part of a broader trend of dismantling environmental protections. Jeffrey Stein, an Earthjustice attorney, stated, “USDA should be working to protect our food system from droughts, wildfires, and extreme weather, not denying the public access to critical resources.”

The lawsuit cites multiple violations of government transparency laws, including the Paperwork Reduction Act and the Freedom of Information Act, and seeks to have the deleted materials restored. Advocates argue that the USDA’s decision puts farmers, researchers, and the public at a disadvantage when it comes to addressing Climate change’s growing impact on agriculture.

As climate threats intensify, it’s more important than ever to Support sustainable farming practices and demand accountability from policymakers. Staying informed and advocating for transparent climate policies is crucial to ensuring a resilient future for farmers and our planet.
