US Air Quality Worsens Affecting Millions Amid Climate Challenges

Nearly 40% of Americans are currently living with unhealthy air pollution levels, with California cities most affected, according to a new report by the American Lung Association (ALA). The report reveals an alarming increase in air Pollution exposure, affecting over 131 million people across the United States, marking an 11.7 million rise from last year. This uptick in Pollution is largely driven by wildfires, alongside prevailing issues of drought and extreme heat, particularly pronounced in California.

The ALA’s annual State of the Air report highlights the growing presence of ozone and fine particulate matter (PM 2.5), which are known to exacerbate lung and heart diseases, trigger asthma attacks, and cause reproductive health problems. Paul Billings, ALA’s senior vice president for advocacy, emphasized the tangible effects of Climate change on public health, stating, “Climate change is not an abstraction. It is a harsh reality impacting millions annually.”

Historical data from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) shows a 78% reduction in emissions from major pollutants since the 1970 Clean Air Act. However, recent increases in wildfire smoke have negated some of these improvements. In the US’s 25 most polluted cities, residents experienced nearly 21 days of significant particle pollution annually, an increase from previous years.

The disproportionate impact on people of color, who are over twice as likely to reside in areas with poor air quality, underscores the lingering effects of racially biased zoning practices. These practices historically positioned industrial and heavily trafficked areas near marginalized communities.

While Bakersfield retains its position as the city with the highest year-round particle Pollution, Los Angeles leads in ozone pollution. Conversely, cities like Bangor, Honolulu, and Wilmington boast the cleanest air in the nation.

Recent federal initiatives aim to curb Pollution further, with new standards introduced by the Biden administration to reduce emissions from diesel engines. Billings advocates for more stringent ozone regulations to address the escalating air quality crisis effectively. As communities grapple with these challenges, the need for concerted action to ensure clean, healthy air becomes increasingly imperative.
