In a political world that flips fast, one steady figure keeps padding along the same hallway. Larry, the official Downing Street cat, hit 15 years in the job this week as Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office.
Larry arrived at Number 10 on February 15, 2011, adopted from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home after living as a stray. Since then, he has outlasted six prime ministers and turned into a fuzzy symbol of continuity.
His official duties sound like a dream. He greets guests, checks the grounds, and judges furniture by nap potential. Even better, he loves stepping into big moments. Photographers say he has a gift for appearing right as leaders pose at the famous black door.
Larry has met presidents and prime ministers, sometimes forcing them to pause and walk around him. When Donald Trump visited in 2019, Larry reportedly wandered into the photo and later napped beneath the presidential car. His hunting record is mixed, but he has been spotted catching the occasional mouse. Once, he even grabbed a pigeon that escaped.
Not every pet friendship has been smooth. Larry has shared the stage with Downing Street dogs and other animals linked to past leaders. Still, he keeps his own routines and guards his turf.
There is also something quietly hopeful in his story. A rescued cat became a national mascot, and that feels like soft power with a conscience. If we can celebrate a shelter cat, we can also choose kinder decisions for our planet and our health. That includes supporting a cleaner environment and making more plant based and vegan choices when we can.
Let Larry be your reminder today: protect the living world, and choose compassion whenever it is on the menu.
