Turning Plastic Waste into Soap Ingredients

plastic waste

Recycling plastic remains a global challenge, with scientists estimating that only nine percent of all plastic produced is actually recycled. A breakthrough from Guoliang “Greg” Liu, a chemistry professor at Virginia Tech, offers a new approach that could make recycling more effective by transforming waste plastic into a key ingredient for soap production.

The difficulty in recycling plastic lies in its contamination by food residue and other materials, as well as the lack of economic incentives to invest in recycling. Liu and his team aim to address these issues by developing a process that uses heat to break down polyethylene and polypropylene, two common types of plastic. This process isolates an oil that closely resembles a molecule used in most soaps.

“It’s a molecule that we use every day,” Liu explained. Unlike many advanced recycling methods that release harmful pollutants, this technique is designed to be environmentally friendly.

The research, recently published in Science, highlights the potential for this innovation to revolutionize recycling. Liu hopes to scale up the process and collaborate with detergent manufacturers and investors to make it commercially viable. “There’s a huge potential out there,” he said.
