The Trump Administration has been no friend to Mother Nature or animals. Since being in office, Trump has removed public access to animal welfare records, supported disruptive oil drilling, including in natural environments like Bears Ears National Monument, permitted the import of animal remains from trophy hunts, approved the culling of 100,000 wild horses and burros, and that is all just the start. The Administration has also announced plans to permit the hunting of bears and wolves in inhumane ways, like shooting them in their own dens and from airplanes.
Trump reversed President Obama’s decision to protect Alaska’s wildlife like bears and wolves, and as one might expect, environmentalists are outraged. Jamie Rappaport Clark, president and CEO of the Center for Biological Diversity, told the Huffington Post, “The Trump administration has somehow reached a new low in protecting wildlife … Allowing the killing of bear cubs and wolf pups in their dens is barbaric and inhumane. The proposed regulations cast aside the very purpose of national parks to protect wildlife and wild places.”
The proposal would allow hunters to kill Alaska’s wildlife, including bears, wolves, coyotes, and caribou, in shocking manners, such as hunting brown and black bears, including cubs, with artificial light, dogs, and bait, shooting baby bears, wolves, and coyotes in their dens, and using boats to chase down and shoot swimming caribou.
