A public university in western Colorado just showed what climate progress can look like when it is practical, quiet, and built to last. Since 2008, Colorado Mesa University has expanded fast, yet its energy use for heating and cooling barely moved because it kept scaling a campus wide geothermal loop. According to Phil McKenna at Inside Climate News, the system has saved the school more than 15 million dollars in energy costs, and that money has supported lower tuition and more scholarships.

Here is the simple idea. Beneath fields and parking lots, hundreds of boreholes reach about 500 feet down, where the temperature stays steady around 60 degrees. Water circulates through those underground lines and swaps heat with the surrounding rock. Then building level heat pumps do the final push to warm rooms in winter or cool them in summer. Because the network can shift heat between buildings, it avoids wasting energy heating one place while cooling another.

The water angle matters too. Instead of relying heavily on evaporative cooling towers, the campus reuses extra summer heat for things like pools, showers, and even irrigation. That helps ease pressure on a strained river basin, which is good for local wildlife and communities alike. An independent utility analysis found the network delivers strong efficiency, and related research on fifth generation district systems is also pointing to big performance gains in the right designs, including this 2024 study.
