In a world where money often fuels destruction, one billionaire chose a different path—buying part of the planet to protect it. Back in 2005, Swedish businessman Johan Eliasch made headlines after purchasing 400,000 acres of Amazon rainforest. But instead of exploiting the land, he immediately shut down logging operations and committed the entire area to Conservation.

Eliasch’s impact didn’t stop there. In 2006, he co-founded Cool Earth, a nonprofit dedicated to rainforest preservation and working with Indigenous communities to keep forests standing. The organisation prioritises empowering local people as the first line of defense against deforestation—a model that’s proven far more effective than outside interference.

According to his website, Eliasch went on to help establish the Rainforest Trust, which has now protected millions of acres of tropical habitat globally. These efforts are not just about saving trees—they’re about preserving entire ecosystems, preventing biodiversity loss, and stabilising the climate.

In 2024, Cool Earth launched an ambitious basic income pilot, offering direct financial Support to rainforest communities. The idea is simple but powerful: give people the means to live without turning to environmentally harmful industries. Early results suggest the approach could be a game-changer in global conservation.

According to Cool Earth, it’s all part of shifting power back to those who live in and protect these forests every day. Johan Eliasch’s journey shows what’s possible when wealth is used not to dominate nature, but to defend it.

If more people in power followed Eliasch’s lead, the planet could look very different. Support organisations like Cool Earth or explore vegan, low-impact lifestyles that help reduce deforestation. Forests aren’t just pretty scenery—they’re our future. Let’s keep them alive.
