A new study suggests that taking a daily prebiotic supplement might help improve memory in older adults. Researchers from King’s College London tested this theory in a groundbreaking way — by studying twins.

Published in Nature Communications, the study involved 36 pairs of twins over the age of 60. To control for genetic differences, one twin in each pair received a daily prebiotic supplement made from plant fibers like inulin and fructooligosaccharide (FOS), while the other was given a placebo. After just 12 weeks, the twins who took the prebiotics performed better on memory tests designed to detect early signs of Alzheimer’s disease.

Prebiotics are plant-based, nondigestible fibers that nourish good bacteria in the gut. Scientists have long suspected a connection between gut health and brain health, and this new research adds to the growing body of evidence linking the two. Dr. Mary Ni Lochlainn, a geriatric researcher at King’s College London, said the results show “huge promise for enhancing brain health and memory in our aging population.”

Although the supplements didn’t improve muscle strength, they were cheap, accessible, and safe. As explained by Dr. Claire Steves, another researcher at King’s College London, these simple plant fibers could become an affordable tool for supporting cognitive health, especially important as Alzheimer’s disease continues to impact millions of Americans.

With more research planned, these findings hint at a future where a plant-based, gut-friendly diet could help protect our brains naturally. You can read more about the study here.

Choosing plant-based foods rich in natural fibers not only supports your gut and brain health but also helps animals and the planet. Let’s keep leaning into natural, sustainable choices that are good for every body — and every being.
