New York City is a wonderful place for animals in need of specialized care – the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center (AMC). At AMC, every patient is treated with the utmost care and attention, none more so than Harrison, a seven-year-old French bulldog sporting lime-green booties on his front paws. Harrison, much like many of his breed, grapples with health challenges inherent to French bulldogs. His human, Grace Kim, attests to the exceptional care provided by AMC, praising their coordination between various medical teams and their ability to offer in-house referrals for specialized procedures.
With over 130 dedicated veterinarians and a staggering 60,000 patient visits logged in 2023 alone, AMC stands as a vital lifeline for pets facing complex medical issues. While the cost of veterinary care continues to rise due to inflation and advancements in treatment, AMC aims to alleviate the financial burden through charitable initiatives. Programs like the Buddy Fund, the Kiki White Umbrella Cockatoo Avian Fund, and the Honey Bunny and ROU German Shepherd Fund provide essential Support to families with limited financial means, ensuring that no pet is left behind due to financial constraints.
AMC’s commitment to charitable care extends beyond domestic pets to include rescue animals like Lynx, a short-haired cat from Brooklyn with a persistent groin wound. With unwavering dedication, the veterinary staff at AMC devised a specialized treatment plan for Lynx, supported by charitable funding to cover the costs of her care.
Under the leadership of Helen Irving, president and CEO of AMC, the hospital undergoes a monumental reconstruction without burdening itself with debt, thanks to generous donations from philanthropists like Elaine and Kenneth Langone. Their contributions underscore a profound commitment to animal welfare and the vital role that organizations like AMC play in the lives of countless pets and their owners.
However, the challenges facing pet owners remain daunting, with the rising cost of veterinary care placing a significant strain on households across the nation. Dr. Emily McCobb, associate clinical professor at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, emphasizes the importance of affordable care options, underscoring the critical role that veterinarians play in advocating for their patients’ well-being.
