The Hidden Environmental and Economic Price We’re All Paying for Plastic’s Oil Dependency

There’s a crisis unfolding in slow motion at your grocery store, and it connects the geopolitical tensions halfway around the world directly to the products stacked on your pantry shelf. The ongoing conflict with Iran has sent oil prices soaring more than 40%, and because over 99% of global plastics are derived from fossil fuels, that surge is rippling through nearly every corner of modern life — from the bag holding your groceries to the packaging around your medications.

According to CNN, supply chain experts are warning that consumers should expect price increases on plastic-heavy goods like disposable cutlery, bottled beverages, and garbage bags within weeks. Higher packaging costs could push food prices up within two to four months, while industries like automotive manufacturing may feel the full impact within a year. The reality is sobering: plastics are so deeply woven into modern supply chains that it’s nearly impossible to trace exactly where the added cost hits in any given product’s price.

The root of the problem runs through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway responsible for roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supply. With that passage disrupted, crude oil has climbed from $67 a barrel to nearly $98 at its peak, and benchmark natural gas prices across Asia and Europe have jumped more than 60%. The Middle East supplies a significant share of the world’s plastic raw materials, with roughly 84% of regional polyethylene capacity relying on that same strait for exports. Plastic resin prices have already surged by double digits across most manufacturing categories in just the past month — a scale that industry veterans say is unprecedented.

This moment is a powerful reminder of why reducing our dependence on single-use plastics matters so deeply — for our wallets, for wildlife, and for the planet. Choosing plant-based products with minimal packaging, supporting sustainable alternatives, and backing advocacy efforts that push for systemic change are all ways to build resilience. Even if the conflict resolved tomorrow, experts warn that supply chains could take years to stabilize — making now the most urgent time to rethink our relationship with plastic.
