Thailand’s natural landscapes are set to form the backdrop for the upcoming installment of the “Jurassic World” series, prompting government officials to issue a firm reminder to filmmakers about the importance of preserving the country’s environmental treasures. The filming, which involves Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson, is scheduled to take place across several iconic locations including Bangkok, Krabi, Phuket, Phang-nga, and Trang. Specific sites highlighted for their natural beauty are Ko Kradan Island and the Huay To Waterfall in Khao Phanom Bencha National Park.

The Natural Resources and Environment Minister, Phatcharavat Wongsuwan, emphasized Thailand’s honor in hosting such a high-profile project. However, he stressed the necessity for the production team to adhere strictly to environmental laws and regulations. The minister’s caution is grounded in a resolve to prevent any potential environmental degradation, reminiscent of the controversies that surrounded the filming of “The Beach” starring Leonardo DiCaprio over twenty years ago. During that production, alterations to Maya Bay included the planting of non-native coconut trees and the disturbance of natural vegetation, actions that faced heavy criticism for their environmental impact.
Learning from past experiences, Athapol Charoenshunsa, head of the Department of National Parks, affirmed that oversight measures would be stringent. He assured that steps would be taken to monitor the filming process closely to safeguard the integrity of Thailand’s natural resources.
The “Jurassic World” franchise, a continuation of the narrative started by Steven Spielberg’s 1993 hit “Jurassic Park,” remains a significant player in the global cinema landscape. The inclusion of Scarlett Johansson in the cast and the direction by Gareth Edwards, known for his 2023 sci-fi action film “The Creator,” also filmed in Thailand, adds to the high expectations for the yet-untitled seventh movie in the series, set for release next year.
This proactive stance by Thai officials reflects a growing awareness and commitment to environmental Conservation, especially in dealing with large-scale international film productions that have the potential to leave lasting impacts on natural ecosystems.
