Although Sam Sartain is only a teenager, he has been through enough trauma to last a lifetime. Sartain was in an ATV accident and the heavy vehicle landed on his right leg. After a number of surgeries, Sartain’s leg had to be amputated, and a few months later he was fitted with a prosthetic leg. Seeing Sartain now, he hardly seems that this experience has dulled his outlook on life. Perhaps, his sunny disposition can be partially credited to his rescued Dachschund, Pooh.

Like Sam, Pooh is also an amputee. Together the pair are the perfect companions, providing endless compassion and smiles for one another.

Sam’s mother found Pooh on the Facebook page of Dachshund Rescue South Florida and immediately knew this little dog would be the perfect friend for Sam. Pooh was rescued by Miami-Dade Animal Rescue after being hit by a car. The little Dachshund was in terrible condition, but the officers who rescued him were able to raise a sum of $5,000 in two days to help pay for Pooh’s care.

Sam told NBC Washington in an interview that when he met Pooh they had an immediate connection, “he looked at me and he realized I guess that we had the same situation and he immediately ran over towards me.”

Sam’s mother explained to NBC Washington, “As a mom you search for any resources that can help and animals are very therapeutic and they give you a reason to get up.”

While the circumstances that lead Sam and Pooh to one another were rather unfortunate, it is wonderful to see that the pair not only survived their individual accidents, but are now well and thriving. There is nothing like having a friend who understands you completely … and when they’re as cute as Pooh, that makes it all the better.
