Meet Alvin, Simon and Theodore, three smiling, tail wagging 14-year-old beagles. Unfortunately, life wasn’t always s sweet for these handsome gents, as they spent the first years of their lives as the victims of cruel human experiments, living in a laboratory in South Korea. When most people think of lab animals, they picture rats or other small rodents, many are unaware that dogs, one of our most beloved animals, are also used as test subjects.
According to the Anti-Vivisection Society, each year as many as 75,000 dogs are used for medical research each year. The same docility and eager to please qualities that make us love them also make them ideal candidates for medical testing. Tragically, when labs are finished with their experiments, they will euthanize the animals. After a life of suffering and fear, this seems like a horrible way to treat any living animal. Thankfully, the good folks at the Beagle Freedom Project are working hard to change all of that.
For dogs like Alvin, Simon and Theodore, who were thrown away after years of experimentation, organizations like Beagle Freedom Project giving them the chance to experience the love and happiness they always deserved. The overwhelming sense of joy that these dogs feel, being hugged and loved for the first time is truly contagious, teaching us that no animal is insignificant.
By becoming aware of your product choices, you can minimize your participation in this cruelty. Beagle Freedom has the awesome Cruelty-Cutter app that will tell you if the products you purchase every day were tested on animals. Should never have been in there in the first place, and David Cameron gave permission for ANOTHER lab in hull, England before he retired. What a legacy.
