In a groundbreaking new initiative, scientists are turning to cat owners to help them unravel the complex genetic and behavioral traits of our feline companions. Spearheaded by the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, along with the UMass Chan Medical School, the project, called Darwin’s Cats, aims to build the largest database of its kind, shedding light on the quirks and health patterns of cats everywhere. With a goal of recruiting 100,000 cats by June 2026, nearly 5,000 have already been registered since 2024.
Unlike many studies that focus on specific breeds or health conditions, Darwin’s Cats aims to gather a diverse range of data from pet cats, strays, and mixed breeds, making this project one-of-a-kind. Dr. Elinor Karlsson, co-founder of Darwin’s Ark and a leading scientist on the project, explains that the study will help us understand how genes influence physical traits, behaviors, and even responses to stimuli like catnip. Additionally, it could offer new insights into genetic risk factors for diseases, which could ultimately improve veterinary care and even inform human health research.
For participating cat owners, the process involves answering surveys about their cat’s behavior and health, along with sequencing their pet’s DNA. This research could pave the way for better preventative care for our feline friends, while also offering fascinating insights into how genetics influence personality traits in both cats and humans. For a $150 donation per cat, owners can help fund this ambitious endeavor and contribute to a deeper understanding of feline genetics.
This project also builds on previous research by Darwin’s Ark, which successfully sequenced the DNA of thousands of dogs to explore behavioral traits across breeds. With cats now the focus, the possibilities for this research seem endless, and the scientists behind Darwin’s Cats are excited about what they’ll discover next.
If you’re a cat owner, consider joining the study to help unlock the mysteries of your furry friend’s genetics and behavior. Every cat’s contribution could bring us one step closer to improving their health and our understanding of how genetics shapes personality across species.
