If your tap water tastes a little salty after a big snow, you are not imagining it. According to Anna Skinner at Newsweek, winter road salt can wash into rivers, lakes, and aquifers that supply drinking water for millions.
When plows spread salt, the meltwater carries sodium and chloride into local waterways. Then utilities may see a sharp jump in salinity. Some treatment plants can remove a little, but many systems were not built for sudden swings.
That matters for taste, but it also matters for health. People on sodium restricted diets may need to pay closer attention, especially if they have high blood pressure or heart issues.
It also harms the environment. Chloride does not break down, so it can build up in groundwater over time. In freshwater, high salinity can kill tiny organisms that keep algae in check. When those organisms crash, algae can surge, and the water can become unsafe for recreation. Fish can also grow smaller, which affects local fishing for food and for fun. Toxic algae can even spill over into risks for animals and wildlife along the shore.
Some states, especially in the Northeast and Mid Atlantic, face bigger spikes because they have dense road networks and heavy salting after storms.
So what can you do at home. First, shovel early and thoroughly so you need less salt later. Next, use the minimum amount and sweep up any leftover crystals once the ice is gone. Finally, Support local efforts that improve snow removal and reduce salt use at the source. Protect the Earth where you live, and keep showing up for cleaner water with more plant based choices and vegan values.
