In a surprising twist, Representative Andrew Garbarino, a Republican from New York, is fighting to protect the very clean energy tax credits his party once opposed. According to The New York Times‘ David Gelles, Garbarino is now at the center of an internal GOP effort to defend a major part of President Biden’s 2022 Inflation Reduction Act—namely, tax credits for renewable energy projects like wind and solar.
Despite voting against the legislation, Garbarino has stepped up as a leading advocate for keeping these credits in place. His pitch? That these tax incentives aren’t new—they’ve been around since at least 1992 and were simply expanded under the IRA. He’s working hard to separate them from the Biden brand and instead position them as bipartisan tools that help American businesses, manufacturing, and even artificial intelligence development.
Last week, Garbarino led a letter signed by 21 House Republicans urging the House Ways and Means Committee not to repeal the credits. Notably, this includes conservatives like Buddy Carter of Georgia. The letter is a direct response to pressure from the far-right Freedom Caucus, which is demanding a full repeal. Garbarino is clear that full repeal would be “too painful” for the economy and energy sector.
Garbarino’s move shows a rare break from party lines, emphasizing that clean energy isn’t just a Democratic cause—it’s a national one. He argues that solar and wind are the fastest and most accessible energy sources to meet U.S. needs, especially as the country faces mounting climate and energy demands.
We need more of this kind of leadership. If Republican lawmakers can see the value in solar, wind, and clean innovation, so can the rest of us. Let’s Support politicians and policies that prioritize a greener, cruelty-free future. Consider switching to renewables, going plant-based, or simply sharing stories like this to spark change.
