Doctors are sounding the alarm on a daily staple in the American diet—ultra-processed foods. According to a recent study has found a disturbing link between high consumption of these foods and the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease. The research, led by Dr. Xiang Gao from Fudan University, followed over 42,000 participants for up to 26 years and revealed that eating 11 or more servings of ultra-processed food per day increased the likelihood of Parkinson’s by 2.5 times.
These foods include everything from diet sodas and hot dogs to packaged snacks and even condiments like ketchup. Scientists point to added sugar, salt, and synthetic additives as key culprits. Bread and cereal were notable exceptions, but nearly every other category of ultra-processed food raised concern.
This isn’t the only recent red flag. Another large-scale study, published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, estimated that ultra-processed foods could be responsible for more premature deaths in the U.S. than fentanyl, with up to 124,000 deaths in 2018 potentially linked to excessive consumption. Professor Carlos Augusto Monteiro, a co-author of that study, warned that the body may never fully adapt to these “synthetic, habit-forming” products.
Experts like Dr. Nikolaos Scarmeas of Columbia University emphasize that preventing neurodegenerative diseases starts with what’s on our plates. Despite pushback from some in the food industry, the evidence is growing—and deeply troubling.
Our health shouldn’t be traded for convenience. Choose whole foods, cook more at home, and Support plant-based, minimally processed diets. The more we shift away from ultra-processed products, the more we protect ourselves—and the planet.
