A leading animal food producer, ADM Animal Nutrition, has initiated a recall of several batches of its feed products due to concerns over potential health hazards to animals, including bone deformities and fatalities in chickens. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued an alert on Monday, highlighting the risks associated with elevated levels of certain minerals in the affected feed.
The recall pertains to specific lots of feed products that may contain heightened levels of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, and chloride. These elevated levels could pose serious health risks to chickens, pigs, cows, and horses, prompting the FDA to issue a warning to consumers.
The investigation into the matter was prompted by customer complaints, including reports of a pig refusing to eat the affected product and chicken deaths linked to consumption of the feed. Upon investigation, ADM Animal Nutrition traced the issue to an equipment failure at its manufacturing facility in Quincy, Illinois, which affected ingredient distribution.
In response to the findings, ADM Animal Nutrition swiftly initiated the recall process, removing all affected products from retail shelves. The company has advised customers who have purchased the recalled feed to discontinue its use immediately and return it for a full refund. Lot numbers can be found on the bottom of the label for easy identification.
The FDA has specified two main products affected by the recall:
Pen Pals® Chicken Starter-Grower 25-lb bag (product no. 70009ACF46, lot no. 506942QN);
Pen Pals Chicken Starter-Grower 50-lb bag (product no. 70009AAA44, lot no. 506942QN);

MotivAte 12-15 DEN 50-lb. bag (product no. 12286CVW, lot no. 507330QN).
These products were distributed within specific date ranges and could have been purchased in various states.
The health risks associated with the elevated levels of minerals vary, from bone deformities and slow growth rates to fatalities in chickens. Additionally, increased sodium and chloride levels can lead to reduced feed intake and diarrhea, while elevated calcium levels can affect feed conversion.
ADM Animal Nutrition has assured consumers of its commitment to addressing the issue promptly and transparently. Customers are urged to check their feed supplies for the specified lot numbers and take appropriate action as advised by the company and regulatory authorities.
