A wild story from northern France has finally come to a close, after a couple was sentenced for illegally keeping a black panther in their apartment. According to The Connexion, the animal—nicknamed Louise—made headlines back in 2019 when it was spotted wandering rooftops in Armentières. Firefighters eventually sedated and rescued her, only for the panther to mysteriously vanish from a zoo days later.

The big cat resurfaced a year later at a wildlife sanctuary in the Netherlands, where she has lived ever since under the name Akilla. Caretakers say she’s thriving in her new environment, finally able to live a safe, more natural life rather than being confined inside a city flat. Sadly, her journey highlights the dangerous and deeply misguided practice of treating wild animals as pets.

The couple responsible faced court this week. The man, who had previously been convicted of keeping other exotic animals, was handed an 18-month suspended sentence, fined €10,000, banned from keeping pets for five years, and ordered to attend an animal awareness course. His partner also received a suspended sentence and was barred from owning animals for two years. Both must also pay fines to animal welfare groups.

The man reportedly thought of the panther as a “big affectionate baby” and even purchased pharmaceutical supplies to care for her. While the cat appeared domesticated and non-aggressive, this doesn’t change the risks—to the animal, to people, and to the environment. Wild creatures belong in their natural habitats or sanctuaries, not in human homes.

Exotic pet ownership not only causes stress and suffering for animals but also fuels trafficking that harms ecosystems worldwide. Stories like Akilla’s remind us that our duty to the Earth and its creatures is to protect, not possess. Choosing compassion means supporting sanctuaries, advocating against wildlife trafficking, and embracing plant-based and sustainable lifestyles that respect all living beings.

Let’s work toward a world where no animal has to be rescued from a rooftop because someone thought it belonged in their living room.
