In East Hartford, Connecticut, animal control officers are investigating a troubling case: someone has been painting squirrels. According to WFSB, two squirrels were spotted near Naubuc Avenue and High Street, one painted blue and the other red.

While officials confirmed the animals appear to be unharmed, they are actively searching for whoever is responsible. Photos of the painted squirrels, shared on social media by the department, quickly drew attention and outrage.

Painting wild creatures may seem like a prank, but it poses serious risks. The chemicals in paints or dyes can be toxic, damaging fur and skin or interfering with a squirrel’s natural ability to regulate body temperature. Even if these individuals seem physically fine now, their long-term health could be compromised.

Cases like this also highlight a larger issue: our relationship with wildlife. Interfering with animals for amusement disrupts their natural behaviors and puts them in danger. Squirrels, like all creatures, play an important role in their local ecosystem, helping with seed dispersal and forest regeneration. Treating them as canvases instead of living beings undermines both animal welfare and environmental balance.

Animal control is urging anyone with information to contact them at 860-291-7572. Protecting wild animals means respecting their autonomy and ensuring their habitats remain safe from unnecessary human harm.

These painted squirrels serve as a reminder that compassion and respect should guide how we share the world with other species. Every creature deserves the freedom to live without being treated as a joke or experiment.
