There are many factors that are contributing to the steady decline of the elephant population, one of the most pertinent being the illegal ivory trade. It is estimated that one elephant is killed every 15 minutes for their ivory and when the adults are slaughtered, they often leave behind vulnerable calves who cannot survive on their own. This vicious cycle is leading the African elephant population to the brink of extinction; some scientists estimate the wild population will be extinction by 2030.
But amidst this tragedy, there is still hope that the elephant population will escape oblivion thanks to the many organizations, like the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT), that are helping to rehabilitate orphaned elephants and given them a fighting chance at survival.
The two baby elephants featured in this video are two such success stories. Both were born to mothers who were raised in by DSWT through their orphaned elephant program. Seeing these two little ones run and play alongside the orphans who are currently being cared for by DSWT gives us such hope for the future of the wild elephant population!
