Same-sex behavior has been found in over 1,500 animal species and has developed as a way to mitigate conflict and strengthen social bonds. Many different types of animals engage in these behaviors. However, from an evolutionary standpoint, scientists have long wondered why. After all, same-sex behavior does not result in the passing of genetic material. For this reason, it has long presented scientists with a quandary. This question has even been given a name; it is called the “Darwinian paradox”. A new study has analyzed literature about same-sex behaviors in many different animal species and has put forth a theory.

A scientific study published in the journal Nature Communications reveals that, for most animals, homosexual behaviors are normal. Indeed, some scientists posit that some level of same-sex behavior occurs in up to 95 percent of animals. Both male and female animals have evolved to display these behaviors. However, males of species that commit adulticide are more likely to engage in same-sex behaviors. Adulticide is when a male will kill a rival male. Same-sex behavior may help lessen the likelihood of these violent interactions taking place.
To review existing data on same-sex behaviors in 1,500 species, scientists created a database. Animals included in the database varied widely. From insects to primates, there was documented evidence of same-sex behaviors. After creating this database, scientists set out to discover why these behaviors had evolved.
Evidence showed that animals from social species are more likely to engage in same-sex behavior. For this reason, scientists believe that many species developed these behaviors to strengthen social relationships inside of a group.
Scientists warn that these findings should not be applied to humans. Rather than focusing on long-term relationships and orientations, the dataset primarily focuses on short-term interactions or mating interactions. Therefore, it cannot be applied to long-term sexual orientation. The dataset does not reflect overall sexual preference or orientation.
No animal, human or otherwise, should experience discrimination or violence based on their gender expression or sexual orientation. Sign this petition Telling the Senate to Protect Gay Marriage!
