In 1976, Mexican priest Sergio Gutiérrez Benítez found a bold way to Support vulnerable children—by stepping into the wrestling ring. By day, he was a humble priest. But by night, under the name Fray Tormenta (“Friar Storm”), he became a masked luchador, raising money for his orphanage through professional wrestling.
As reported by Erik Barnes for GOOD, Gutiérrez Benítez’s early life was marked by addiction and crime, but after a turning point in a church confessional, he devoted himself to helping others. After studying theology in Europe, he returned to Mexico, where he began helping addicts and eventually opened an orphanage.
Struggling to fund it, he was inspired by the movie El señor Tormenta, about a priest who wrestled to Support children. Taking that idea literally, Gutiérrez Benítez trained at 4 a.m. so he wouldn’t miss morning Mass. His first match earned him just $15, but over time, Fray Tormenta became a popular figure in lucha libre, attracting crowds and donations.
Though he initially kept his identity secret, it was accidentally revealed by a fellow wrestler. Once the public learned that Fray Tormenta was a priest raising money for orphans, Support grew. He even wore his mask during Mass. After retiring in 2011, he had helped raise around 2,500 children.
Now 79, he lives with one of his former orphans, Crispín Bautista Alvalle, who has taken on the Fray Tormenta mantle in the ring. A GoFundMe was launched to help cover the priest’s mounting medical bills.
Fray Tormenta’s real-life story inspired the 2006 movie Nacho Libre starring Jack Black. But beyond the pop culture fame, his life shows how compassion, creativity, and determination can uplift lives—and animals aren’t the only ones who benefit when we think beyond ourselves.
If Fray Tormenta could give his life for others in such a unique way, we can all do a little more. Donate, go plant-based, or Support a local animal shelter—every small action matters.
