Meet U.S. Olympian Gus Kenworthy’s Adorable Rescued Sochi Dogs! (VIDEO)

Just before the 2014 Winter Olympics, a heartbreaking story came to light about a stray animal cull being carried out in Sochi in an attempt to “clean the city” prior to the big games.

The original extermination plan was set to kill 2,000 street dogs, but Kelly O’Meara, director of companion animals and engagement for Humane Society International stated that “upward of 5,000 dogs” may have been killed since the cull was set in motion in 2013.

As reports spread of Sochi’s plans, animal lovers and activists jumped into action, setting up massive social media campaigns and scrambling to rescue as many strays off Sochi’s streets as possible before the extermination company got to them.

Celebrities and Olympians also joined the rescue efforts including snowboarder Lindsey Jacobellis, U.S. Olympic hockey team members, actress Katherine Heigl, E! News correspondent Ali Fedotowsky, and most notably 2014 silver medal winning skier, Gus Kenworthy.

Kenworthy and photographer friend Robin Macdonald worked together to rescue four pups and their mother from Sochi.

Just recently, the adorable family finally made their way to the U.S., where they will stay with Kenworthy until they find their forever homes. Kenworthy plans to adopt both the smallest and largest pups of the litter himself. Macdonald will also be adopting one of the puppies.

Both Kenworthy and Macdonald have been waiting over a month to bring this family to safety, and now we can all finally “meet” these adorable dogs in the video below! How happy they all are!
