Marshmallow Root May Be The Fast Cough Remedy Doctors Mention

A cough can hang on long after you feel fine, and it can make sleep and work miserable. If you are tired of cough drops, there is a gentle option that feels almost old fashioned. According to Ashley Broadwater at HuffPost, some doctors point to marshmallow root extract, a herb used for centuries.

Marshmallow root, or Althaea officinalis, makes a thick, sticky coating when it mixes with water. That coating can calm throat irritation, which is often what keeps a dry cough going. A 2018 consumer survey in Complementary Medicine Research reported that many people felt relief within about 10 minutes.

You will not get this effect from a bag of sugary marshmallows, since most do not contain the medicinal extract. Instead, look for tea, a tincture, or lozenges made with marshmallow root. If you want longer relief, lozenges or warm tea can be easier than a quick sip.

Other simple options may help, too. Warm salt water gargles can ease throat inflammation. Pineapple juice contains bromelain, which may reduce mucus. Licorice root tea is another soothing drink. If you sip broth, make it vegetable broth to match your vegan values.

Still, treat this as Support for a mild cough, not a cure for something serious. Talk with a clinician first if you take other meds, since herb and drug interactions can happen. Also get checked if your cough lasts more than three weeks, or you have chest pain, weight loss, or immune problems.

Honey may also soothe the throat, but it is not vegan. If that matters to you, choose a plant based marshmallow root product without honey. That is kinder to animals and still gentle for your health.
